Spot the problem: confession of the week

Subtitles include: “I was a teenage porn addict” or “I have sinned against you!”

One of the tools that religions and other ideologies will use against you is simple… take something normal and natural and make it a sin. The resulting guilt, fear of discovery and self loathing will make people desperate for forgiveness that only those who wish to control them can bestow. In the “religious right” we have the criminalization of the basic sex drives. In radical feminism we have… the criminalization of the basic sex drive.

After internalizing that and a fundamental self loathing, you get people like this poor bastard…

“So yes, I’m realizing I have a problem. My life is being swallowed as I spend hours online looking at things, downloading them and then deleting them. I feel guilty every time I do so, which then bleeds over into the times I’m not consuming porn. I can feel it effecting my thought process, sexual thoughts and urges become a bit more visceral, I find myself looking at women in ways I know I shouldn’t be, in ways I never used to before.” – link

The problem here wasn’t with the occasional forays into porn… it was with the guilt, self hatred, fear of discovery and cognitive dissonance that arises from being made to believe that something natural (liking to look at people have sex) is evil.

It’s silly… and it’s damaging.
