Recently some of the more amusingly ignorant in the “radical feminist” blog-o-sphere have once again indulged their obsession with breasts. It’s good to see that they have taken some time off from all that porn they keep thinking about, someone could go blind.
Before I go on, as a service to the radical feminist community I have whipped up these posters. You can use them to insult and abuse any woman who makes you feel bad when you look in a mirror. Make some stickers out of them, activists are good at that.
In the inevitable train wreck that followed a post full of such deep insight as this:
“As for the self-esteem thing, well, I don’t buy that getting the universally recognized symbols of desperation implanted into your body is good for the long-term self-esteem, but what do I know? I did grow up with the benefit of the indie/punk subculture, where being kind of flat is something of a badge of pride.” – Amanda “I’m more indie than you” Marcotte *
We see all the usual stuff. Mostly jealousy. Let’s be honest, it’s hard to real all the wailing and gnashing of teeth without hearing the obvious desperation come through loud and clear. There are lots and lots of women who simply hate anyone who is prettier / hotter / more attractive than they are. Many of those women have found a justification and support group among the like minded haters so often members of the radfem “tribe”.
Now lets be clear… obviously not every woman who decided that breast implants (or some gym time for that matter) is a babe hater with an inferiority complex. Women will make all sorts of decisions for all sorts of reasons. In theory that’s one of the things feminism is all about – the freedom for women to choose what to do with their bodies.
The difference in radfem circles is that the concept of choice only really applies to the choices they like. Someone said it very well in a comment to a pretty brilliant post over ar Ren’s place. Oh wait, it was me.
Poor Amanda. She really has sort of snapped as far as I can tell.
She has real issues with the female form anyway. Maybe it’s a confidence issue. She certainly really, really has a lot of baggage about women who might have larger breasts than her.
By referring to implants as “the universally recognized symbols of desperation” we see that not only is she confused… she thinks her worldview is universal. Of course, she lives in an echo chamber, so we cant expect more.
What is interesting is that she then immediately discusses how her body makes her feel good and that she likes how her breast shape influences others.
Amanda: “I did grow up with the benefit of the indie/punk subculture, where being kind of flat is something of a badge of pride”
See? it’s not that you aren’t supposed to take pride in how you look… you just have to look RIGHT, then you’re allowed to have pride. In other words… look like her.
I get the feeling poor Amanda lost a few crushes to girls who might have been a bit curvier, ya know?” – Soulhuntre commenting at RE
Of course no one in the radfem community wants to pay any attention to anything Ren has to say. I mean, she’s a woman and a feminist but clearly sheisn’t the right type of person for them. In other words she has a brain and thinks for herself.
If there is one thing there isn’t any place for in radical feminism it’s a woman who refuses to think what she’s told to think.
* note: to the best of my knowledge Amanda has about as much legitimacy in indie / punk circles as she does in presidential politics.
