If you're not uber-opressed, shut the hell up!
That’s the general tone of most victimization based echo chambers and never is it more evident than in the horrified hand wringing happening over at Feministe about the movie Juno. If your a downtrodden radfem with a persecution complex the movie has a few glaring problems…
- Diablo Cody (the author) is successful, white and attractive – this immediately makes her “the enemy”
- The author also has the temerity not to be spending all her time whining about the patriarchy keeping the sista’s down
- The author doesn’t hate sex
- The author has been a stripper
- The author lists “cock-gobbling” as an interest in her profile thus proving she has a sense of humor and does not hate men… two cardinal sins
- The main character of the movie Juno decides to carry her pregnancy to term… because apparently being “pro choice” really only means supporting one of those choices in the minds of the find chicks at Feministe!
Let’s listen in as the envy and hatred really get going… this quote is a example of envy and class anger:
“And I guess I can’t even be surprised that it’s the white prep school girl from the suburbs who decides to audition at the “sleaziest†club she can find, for a lark and a blog, who ends up getting a book deal.” – poor little Holly at Feministe!
Here is Holly being annoyed that anyone not living in poverty dares to have a life, have any fun or have any voice…
“But still… aaahghgh…. the whole things is somehow so obnoxious and entitled, it makes my head hurt.” – poor little Holly at Feministe!
One of the commenters asks what I think they felt was a rhetorical question, but they might be surprised at the answer.
“As far as her saying that she did it simply for something to blog about, well, I don’t understand why anyone should be upset with that reason. Would we rather people go into stripping and other areas of the sex industry because they’re poor and feel they “have toâ€?” – Lirpa commenting
Yes Lirpa, that’s exactly the situation. People like Holly and the rest of the Feministe! crowd don’t gain power whenever a woman makes a choice and is happy with that choice. They only gain power when they can point to someone downtrodden, hurt and broken. They require the existence of victims for their very survival. The minute people wake up to the reality of their own power then the vultures who prey on their fear and pain won’t be able to demand retribution on their behalf.
We have discussed this before… but notice the weapons at work here. These peopel need you to see and hear only the worst cases, only the bad, only the horror. Since those cases are only a small part of the story they need some way to trivialize, invalidate and since anyone who doesn’t fit the model they want to present to the world. That term is “privilege”. In Feministe! land it means if your not at the absolute bottom then you better shut the hell up.
“Yeah. I hate to rain all over Diablo Cody’s hipness, but it’s pretty much privilege city for her to indulge a taste for a little sexualized slumming and then just walk away.” – NBarnes chimes in
Sara J almost sees the shape of the problem, but I don’t think she really sees how evil it is yet…
“Sometimes I think feminism can lead us into turning on anyone who’s unfortunately born with some level of privilege because they OBVIOUSLY can’t be as oppressed as we are and therefore aren’t allowed to have experiences and god forbid, write about them.” – Sara J comes close to the truth
Holly tries to save some face here by commenting herself. Sadly it just shows how much the echo chamber has blinded her…
“But what still remains is that there is a reason Diablo Cody is the one being published and there is no getting away from the fact that that’s fucked up. This is completely and totally related to brownfemipower’s whole discussion about which feminist voices are published and taught and which end up barely noticed.” – Holly trying to pull out of the tailspin
I’ll refrain from commenting about brownfemipower’s views on race in this post (that’s a whole other thing).
What Holly don’t get is that this isn’t a minority thing. It’s simply that angry, bitter women who harbor delusions about a world spanning conspiracy to control their vaginas and somehow believe that “the man” owes them success as payment for past wrongs will probably always wind up picked last in the “things I want to read and see in mainstream media” dodge ball game.
In other words… bitter, petty, spiteful angry people aren’t popular. What a shock. Must be part of that conspiracy huh?
Meanwhile in other threads we get to see some stunning examples of full on assholes in full bloom – now in tasty anti-Semitic flavor!
“Wow, nice. More propaganda designed to destroy families by promoting irresponsible breeding under the guise of empowering sluts.
So, what else is new in Hebrewood…” – christx being an idiot in this thread
Remember all you non-victims, sit down and shut up!

Thanks, this is incredibly useful information. I had no idea that I was a radical feminist, that sex, strippers and cock-gobbling are not truly among my interests (because I guess I hate those things), that I’m actually poor and downtrodden instead of comfortably middle-class, that I somehow got a vagina that can be part of a worldwide conspiracy, that I haven’t gotten published in mainstream media, or that I am an enemy to all attractive, successful white people. (I will tell my eligible friends and family immediately.) All of this refreshing new information is both entertaining and completely novel to me, and I now know a whole lot more about myself than I did an hour ago. Thank you!
Hey Holly
Just for fun, let’s take this one at a time…
Radical Feminist – if your not, then what are you doing there at Feministe! Clearly you do see that it is a radical feminist blog, right?
“that sex, strippers and cock-gobbling are not truly among my interests”
I re-read my post, and in no place can I see that I mentioned these things as not being in your interest set. In fact, I made no comments about what may or may not interest you at all. I am particularly pleased (and somewhat surprised) to find that there are cock-gobblers among the Feministe! authors. Unless you mean it literally, then that would make sense.
“that I’m actually poor and downtrodden instead of comfortably middle-class”
Are you sure you commented on the right blog? Because I certainly didn’t make any statements at all nor did I speculate about your race or economic status.
I did say that I feel you find the opinions and experiences of those you consider “privileged” to be disturbing and less than valid and I stand by it. If you consider yourself privileged then that would apply to your self image as well.
I also mentioned that I think you harbor anger towards those you consider to be privileged due to their race or economic status. In no way does that disqualify you from that class.
Not speaking of you here, but many of the most angry “class warriors” in history came from the middle or upper classes they came to despise. There is a reason why the poor rarely push for communism and socialism while the “revolutionaries” come from the middle classes. Self hatred is powerful.
“that I somehow got a vagina”
Do you not have one? I think I could be forgiven for the assumption that someone named “Holly” posting at Feministe! is female. If your gender is news to you you may wish to seek medical help.
“that can be part of a worldwide conspiracy”
The general tone at Feministe! is one of worldwide conspiracy. They call it “The Patriarchy” and at times opine about it’s evils at length. Your choice to blog there will inevitably tie you to that view int he minds of the readers. If you disagree that such a conspiracy exists, you should probably blog somewhere else before they find out.
“that I haven’t gotten published in mainstream media”
I didn’t comment on your published (or not) status at all. Again, I wonder which blog you actually read?
I do feel you are envious of Diablo Cody and I think you feel she got a break she might not have deserved due to her class and color. Hell, it is a core part of your thesis. Again,t his certainly doesn’t mean you yourself have not been published.
“or that I am an enemy to all attractive, successful white people”
I didn’t say you’re their enemy. I said that you try and downplay their voice and their stories in favor of the worst case stories… and you do. I think that Feministe! as a whole is home to vultures and fear mongers. To me, your post fit right in. Granted, it isn’t as strident as some… but all the earmarks were there.
I’m willing to grant provisionally that your not a power hungry vulture selling fear and victimization for personal gain until you blog more. You might just not have realized thats the crowd you fell in with
” (I will tell my eligible friends and family immediately.)”
You might want to wait till you know for sure about the vagina thing. Better to tell them the whole story all at once.
