We have all heard about the “women only” subway cars they have in Japan. Theoretically the epidemic of manga toting men groping the female riders is so out of control that no one is safe. In response to the panic the government has made the same mistakes that happen again and again – they over-reacted and threw any semblance of justice out the window.
It is inevitable that whenever you build an atmosphere where the mere accusation of a “he said/she said” crime is enough to cause significant damage because of a presumption of guilt (social or legal) you will breed extortion and false accusation. So it has happened in Japan.
Many young girls are accusing men of groping them. A typical case is that two girls work together. After they designate their target, one of the girls will follow the man off the train and say “Sawatta no ne?” or “You touched me.” The second girl would join in as a stranger and say “yeah I saw you touch her.” The first girl would then say, “give me 40,000 yen and we can forget about this or I go to the police.” – the scoop from Danny Choo
It has gotten so bad that the men are buying “strap hanger” style straps to use that don’t attach to anything… just so they can show that their hands are occupied. Alternatively, they are demanding “men only” cars so they can be safe from false accusation and extortion.
