Predictable cowardice…

Anyone who has been following the William and Mary College debate debacle as it unfolds knew this was coming. Let’s recap the situation*.

  1. W&M decide to hold debate
  2. W&M invite a number of folks who believe (basically) that women are to weak willed and easily lead to be able to make decisions about how to dress, who to fuck and whether or not to get paid for any of it. It turns out now that W&M cast their nets far and wide including the fabulously crazy Heart as well as the secretive and paranoid Sam Berg. Sam accepted.
  3. W&M, contrary to the way these things usually go actually had the temerity to invite to the panel some of the people who might actually know what they are talking about. By that I mean actual sex workers.
  4. Sam Berg flipped out. She claims it is only because Ren once said something nasty, but in reality the problem is that even when the insane stalker army from the secret genderberg forums threatened Ren’s with real world harm she didn’t buckle under. That’s a problem for people like Sam who mainly use intimidation as a weapon to silence dissent.
  5. Sam did what people like her usually do… pulled the victim card out of her toolkit and tossed it at W&M. The exact details are so far unknown but we can be assured that her point was that she was simply too emotionally fragile to be in the same room with Ren. Ont he topic of her emotional instability Sam and I probably agree.
  6. Contrary to my previous prediction, and to their immense credit, the folks at W&M did not buckle under and reward the "I’ll cry like a baby" tactic. They stood firm
  7. When it became clear that things would not go her way, Sam and her supporters cast about for another excuse. In their desperation the best they came up with was "professionalism". We will leave aside the shear silliness of someone called "Witchy-Woo" making a case for "professionalism" and simply point out that most of the people who are using the word are barking mad so it is still funny.
  8. Predictably, Sam Berg has tucked tail under and run, sending out what amounts to a press release via friendly mouthpiece blogs.
  9. Ren went anyway and it seems to have worked out wonderfully.

Of course the beauty of being a professional victim is that cowardice isn’t really a flaw. Since the whole point of basing your life on your own victimization is to point out how weak you are it sort of fits right in.

Amusing as hell.

* note: I am putting this together from the outside. Additional information is of course welcome.
