I consider myself an independent with possibly libertarian leanings. If I actually have to use a word to describe myself that word would be “Objectivist”. For the entire time Bill Clinton was in the White House I found his policies, his character and his leadership to be shallow, false and ineffective. When it became clear that Hillary’s career didn’t end with her husbands I really was not looking forward to dealing with her any longer than necessary.
In short, I am many things – but a Clinton supporter wasn’t one of them till a short while ago. Fortunately, order has been restored to the universe.
During the primaries as I watched Hillary battle the entirety of her party for the nomination, I started to respect her. I wouldn’t have voted for her, but I started to think that if my choices came down to her or McCain that at least if she won the country wouldn’t not be left defenseless. She showed herself to be tough, determined, willing to fight and keep fighting and unwilling to surrender. When the DNC made their desperate final move and effectively re-wrote the results of an election by party fiat I saw her refuse to accept it and I applauded her.
For just a moment, it looked like against all odds we might finally see a Clinton stand up for what is right – not what is politically expedient. I should have known better.
When the party put the thumbscrews on and the possibility of money (paying off her campaign debt) and holding onto what little power her party was willing to toss her as a scrap Hillary went ahead and sucked it up like a good little girl. Despite being the subject of sexist attacks from within her own party, despite having an election re-written to oust her against all ethical justification Hillary turned to her 18+ million supporters and told them, in effect that none of that matters… only subservience to the party matters.
Sadly, many of them will do exactly that. Surprisingly though some of them have the strength to decide that they will not be taken for granted.
She put the best possible face on it of course but in the end that pretty speech came down to this. “It doesn’t mater how evil these people are, it doesn’t matter how badly they treat you, it doesn’t matter how selfishly they act – be good Democrats and make sure you continue to act as their safety net. Because nothing matters as much as your submission to the party.”
A Clinton giving in to political expediency? Really? I am shocked, I promise.
