Hiroshima: The hard choice, the right choice

08/06/1945 is the date that the United States took decisive action to our war with the Japanese Empire. Three days later the strike on Hiroshima was followed up with a strike on Nagasaki. The loss of Japanese life was terrible – the number of American lives saved incalculable.

Make absolutely no mistake – there was going to be massive loss of life to end that war one way or the other. The United Stated had only a few choices to make.

  • How many of our soldiers and civilians would have to die to end it
  • How long would that process divert critical resources needed elsewhere
  • How weakened would we be by the effort when we had a growing threat from the Soviet Union to contain

I have absolutely no problem celebrating the choice we made. It was hard and it was right. Not only was that decision the right one for the time but it’s echo’s have help secure peace and security for the US an it’s allies in the decades since.

My sympathies go out to the Japanese people for the loss they suffered – but not a single word of apology.
